We can see that climate change is upon us. We know that we have a limited time left. This has caused many countries, including the United States, to begin a plan on how to combat the dramatic change. This has also motivated young protestors around the world to use their voices and attempt to make change.
The U.S. has implemented many changes in hopes of fighting climate change. NPR.org says that it has changed its standards for fuel-efficiency in vehicles (What Countries Are Doing). California supposedly began reducing greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, factories, and power plants in 2013. However, the U.S. has not said how exactly it will accomplish this. More action will need to be taken if the states want to see a change in this climate catastrophe.
While countries are working to fix the global problem, students from around the world are beginning to protest. During the most recent one on March 14th, 2019, thousands of kids across the globe skipped class to protest the lack of action being taken on climate change. More than 100 countries participated in this protest. Rallies were held in places like South Africa, Rome, India, and for the first time, the United States. According to NPR.org, it was the largest yet this month (Skipping School). Protests started last summer when Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old from Sweden, voiced her opinion that lawmakers were not doing enough to fight the “existential crisis.”Greta has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
The U.S. is doing a lot to combat climate change, but it may not be enough yet. On the other hand, youth are taking action. I’m proud that students across the world are recognizing the problem at hand are motivated to do their part in helping climate change.
